Each month, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted profiles a different industry or profession for its role in driving a more positive business climate in Ohio, and this month’s profession is accounting.

April’s campaign, “By the Numbers ... How CPAs Drive Business,” recognizes the work CPAs do to help companies succeed across Ohio.

Husted recently joined Scott Wiley, CAE, president and CEO of The Ohio Society of CPAs, in Akron.

Husted spoke at the start of Advance, a new OSCPA program exploring challenges and trends in today’s growing global business environment.

“There are over 85,000 CPAs and accounting professionals in Ohio representing small businesses and job creators across the state,” Husted said. “CPAs help position businesses to flourish in the global economy and also work with public officials to simplify the tax code and create policies that make sense for business in Ohio.”

Over the next two weeks, Wiley is traveling to eight Ohio cities to talk with thousands of CPAs at Advance sessions.

Topics will include talent management and generational issues and the impact to organizations, capitalizing on the shifting business landscape, trends in the accounting profession and leveraging technology to enhance productivity and collaboration.

“In today’s world, disruption is the new reality,” said Wiley. “CPAs are working with companies across Ohio to develop new strategies to grow Ohio’s businesses. We appreciate Sen. Husted’s recognition that CPAs are vital partners in this process.”

The speeches follow a diversity award that was given to the Ohio Society of CPAs.

The Corporate Diversity Award was given by The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business for the association’s innovative programs, including the Accounting Careers Awareness Program, the ASCEND Leadership Conference and ASPIRE: Opportunities in Accounting.

“At The Ohio Society of CPAs, our commitment to diversity and inclusion is a steadfast part of who we are and what we stand for,” said Wiley. “I think about all of the organizations who are being recognized and the honor is truly ours. We are an organization who won’t just accept that diversity and inclusion is important, we expect diversity and inclusion to be a part of a thriving business community.”

The Ohio Society of CPAs is an influential voice that empowers Ohio’s 30,000 CPAs and financial professionals to “drive value as trusted business advisors by advancing advocacy and education programs that strengthen Ohio’s tax and business climate.”

“The event was about recognizing those already doing something and encouraging them to keep up the good work,” David Harrison, director, Fisher College of Business Office of Diversity and Inclusion Student Services said. “OSCPA received the award because we felt over the years OSCPA has gone above and beyond and should be recognized.”
